How did Arbor Shepherd Huts all begin?
“It all started with a desire to build something beautiful and functional. I was tinkering around in a little boathouse just outside of Henley, and the idea of a shepherd's hut sparked my imagination. I had discovered that where I lived, there was a huge potential for people to expand on their living space by venturing into their available outdoor space. Where an extension requires a huge amount of financial investment, planning permission and many other hurdles, here’s something that I can build to an extremely high level that allows people to do just that. The winters here can be brutal, and the first build was a real challenge [laughs]. But I was determined, and slowly, the first Arbor hut took shape.
“That first winter was a test – the cold, the damp, it wasn't exactly ideal! But it pushed me to find solutions, to invest in better equipment and create a more efficient workspace. I have a real love of problem solving and as difficult as it was, I really enjoyed it. I learnt a lot about the way I work and it instilled in me a deep respect for the power of perseverance and the importance of being adaptable.”
“We take pride in offering exceptional customer service. We work closely with our clients to understand their vision and tailor the design to their needs. When someone chooses an Arbor hut, they're not just buying a product; they're investing in a piece of craftsmanship, and we want the entire experience to reflect that.”
If you were to build your own personal shepherd hut, are there any features you would absolutely have to include?
We’ve spent such a lot of time designing and re designing our perfect shepherd hut. If I were to design my own, there would definitely be a few features I couldn't live without.
First and foremost, I'd have to have a picture window, ideally stretching across one wall. I spend so much time surrounded by beautiful countryside here, it would be a shame not to maximise the view! I love making the most of natural light. We recently delivered a hut with a picture window and the views were incredible. Our customers were really pleased with it - as were we.
When it comes to creature comforts in a shepherd's hut, what are some must-haves for you, Tommy? For instance, are there any particular toilet options, heating systems, or stove preferences?
“Creature comforts are definitely important, even in a small space! When it comes to toilets, there are a few options depending on the setup. For a fully off-grid experience, a composting toilet can be a great choice. They're eco-friendly and don't require a water connection. However, if there's a mains water supply available, then a traditional flushing toilet with a macerator pump can be installed for maximum convenience.
“As for heating, underfloor heating is a fantastic option for shepherd's huts. It provides a gentle, even heat that keeps the entire space warm and cosy, especially during those chilly winter months. It's also space-saving since there are no radiators taking up precious floor space. However, for that classic shepherd's hut ambiance, you can't beat a wood-burning stove. The crackle of fire, the visual warmth – it truly creates a special atmosphere. In fact, some shepherd huts have both underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove, offering the best of both worlds!
It's abundantly clear that Arbor Shepherd Huts are built with the utmost care and dedication. Tommy's passion for his craft shines through, and his commitment to using top-quality materials ensures that each shepherd hut is a beautiful and enduring creation. It's no wonder that Arbor Shepherd Huts have become synonymous with quality and craftsmanship.
