The start of Arbor Shepherd Huts

As Tommy embarked on the ambitious project of constructing Arbor's first shepherd's hut, he faced numerous challenges. But with his unwavering determination and passion for craftsmanship, he overcame them all. Here are some of the obstacles he encountered and how he overcame them:

  • Weather: The extreme winter of 2016 made it difficult for Tommy to work on the hut. The cold and damp conditions made it a difficult place to be but being a passionate and determined person, he persevered. To combat this, Tommy invested in some high-quality winter gear and installed some temporary heating in the boathouse. This made it more bearable for him to work and allowed him to make progress even in the harshest conditions.

  • Limited space: The small, dilapidated boathouse in Fawley provided very limited space for Tommy to work on the hut. He had to constantly move things around to make room for the materials and tools he needed. To make the most of the limited space, Tommy came up with creative storage solutions and utilised every inch of the boathouse.

  • Lack of resources: As a small business owner, Tommy had to work with a limited budget. He couldn't afford to buy all the materials he needed upfront, so he had to be resourceful and find ways to make do with what he had. He also borrowed some tools from friends and family to save money.

Despite all the challenges, Tommy persevered and completed the shepherd's hut in the early spring of 2017. The finished product was a testament to his hard work and dedication to his craft. It was a cosy and charming little hut, a true labour of love. Following this, Arbor began to offer a small range of different shepherd huts to buy each with their own charm.

Shortly after, Tommy's business outgrew the boat shed, prompting him to find a new workspace.

Arbor's relocation was a significant step towards expanding the business. With a larger space, he could work on more projects simultaneously and take on bigger orders. As he settled into his new workspace, he began to make some changes and improvements to his business:

  • Tommy invested in new and advanced tools and equipment to enhance the quality of his work and increase efficiency. He wanted to make sure that his customers always received the best possible products.

  • He also started hiring more employees to help him with the workload. Tommy knew that he couldn't handle everything alone and that he needed a team that shared his passion and dedication to craftsmanship.

  • Tommy began to market his business. He set up a website and social media pages, showcasing his work and sharing updates on his current projects. He also attended trade shows and events to network with potential clients and promote his brand.

  • With the increased space, Tommy was able to experiment with new designs and products.

  • As Tommy's reputation grew, he started receiving orders from clients across the country. He even landed a few high-profile clients overseas who admired his work and wanted to collaborate with him on special projects.

Arbor's relocation was a pivotal moment. It allowed Tommy to expand his business and take it to new heights. With his talent and hard work, Tommy had created a brand that was synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. With shepherd huts in The New Forest, shepherd huts in North Yorkshire and shepherd huts in Suffolk, people were beginning to discover why Arbor was quickly becoming one of the UKs top shepherds hut manufacturers.

- Foundation and Mobility: Shepherd huts are built on wheels, allowing for transportation and mobility. The mobility feature enables individuals to position their hut in various locations without the need for a permanent foundation, minimising the impact on the land.

- Sustainable Materials: The use of eco-friendly materials, such as reclaimed wood, natural insulation, and low-impact construction supplies, ensures that the shepherd hut is built with sustainability in mind. These materials contribute to the energy efficiency and overall eco-friendliness of the structure.

- Efficient Insulation: To provide a comfortable living environment in diverse climates, shepherd huts are insulated using sustainable materials that offer thermal efficiency and minimise energy consumption.

- Durable Roofing and Cladding: The roofing and cladding materials used in shepherd hut construction are selected for their durability, weather resistance, and aesthetic appeal, providing long-lasting protection from the elements.

Designing the Interior of Your Shepherd Hut: Tips and Ideas

The interior design of a shepherd hut plays a pivotal role in creating a welcoming and functional living space that reflects the unique preferences and lifestyle of the occupants. Despite its compact size, a shepherd hut can be adorned with thoughtful decor and design elements to evoke a sense of comfort and style. Consider the following aspects when designing the interior of your shepherd hut:

- Space Optimisation: Utilise multifunctional furniture, such as convertible seating and storage solutions, to maximise the available space and create a versatile living area.

- Natural Elements: Incorporate natural materials and elements, such as wood accents, stone finishes, and organic textiles, to bring the beauty of the outdoors into your living space and establish a harmonious connection with nature.

- Lighting and Ambiance: Strategic lighting choices, including natural light optimisation and energy-efficient fixtures, can enhance the ambiance of the shepherd hut, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

- Personal Touches: Infuse the interior with personal touches, such as artwork, plants, and cherished belongings, to imbue the space with character and reflect your individual style and preferences.

- Functional Kitchenette: Design a compact yet functional kitchenette area that allows for meal preparation and dining within the limited space, incorporating efficient appliances and storage solutions.

Finding the perfect location for your shepherd hut

Selecting the right location for your shepherd hut is crucial to fully embrace the benefits of sustainable living and connect with the natural environment. Whether you seek a serene countryside setting, a coastal retreat, or a woodland hideaway, the location of your shepherd hut will significantly influence your living experience. Consider the following factors when choosing the perfect spot for your sustainable sanctuary:

- Scenic Surroundings: Look for a location that offers stunning natural landscapes, whether it's rolling hills, lush meadows, or sweeping ocean views. The beauty of the surroundings will enhance your daily experience and provide a sense of tranquility.

- Accessibility and Amenities: While embracing a sustainable lifestyle, it's essential to ensure that your chosen location provides access to essential amenities such as water sources, renewable energy options, and waste disposal facilities.

- Regulatory Considerations: Research local zoning regulations and planning permissions to ensure that your shepherd hut can be legally placed in your desired location. Understanding the legal aspects will prevent any complications or restrictions down the line.

Cost considerations and financing options

While the appeal of sustainable living in a shepherd hut is undeniable, it's essential to consider the associated costs and explore financing options to make this feasible. The following factors should be taken into account when assessing the financial aspects of owning a shepherd hut:

- Initial Investment: The cost of purchasing a shepherd hut varies based on factors such as size, design, features, and customisation options. It's important to evaluate the initial investment required to acquire a shepherd hut that meets your preferences and requirements.

- Site Preparation: Depending on the chosen location, site preparation may involve additional expenses, such as leveling the land, establishing utility connections, and complying with local regulations.

- Maintenance and Upkeep: Budget for ongoing maintenance and upkeep costs associated with the shepherd hut, including repairs, utilities, and any necessary upgrades to enhance comfort and sustainability.

- Financing Options: Explore financing options, such as personal loans, green mortgages, or sustainable living grants, to support the purchase and installation of a shepherd hut. Some financial institutions offer specialised loans tailored to sustainable housing solutions.
